The Growing Gator

In this exploration, students observe the changes that occur in an artificial (plastic) alligator over time. This activity provides a great opportunity for students to make careful observations and measurements as they measure the unexpected changes that happen to the material (matter) that make up the gator.
In doing so, they learn that the gator is made from a Superabsorbent Polymer (SAP) material.   SAP's are are unique in their ability to absorb tremendous amounts of certain liquids.  As a result, the gator is able to absorb over 300 times their own weight in pure water and, in doing so, it also expands up to 60 times its original volume (the amount of space that the gator takes up.  Students, observe, measure, record, and discuss the changes that occur in this incredible critter.

While designed for 2nd grade (properties of matter), this lesson can be modified to work well for Kg (properties of matter) or 5th grade (chemical/physical changes).
